Santa Cruz Sentinel: State is poised on to plunge into an education black hole

California is poised to plunge into an educational black hole.

It's hardly hyperbole to say that a financial bullet that was partially dodged last year is aimed directly at many school districts this year ---- especially ones that can least afford further injuries. ...

Teachers and parents have already been told to expect bigger class sizes. Some teachers expect to get layoff notices in a few months as schools cut expenses.
A similar situation occurred last year, but federal stimulus funds came through in late summer to prevent many layoffs and drastic cuts.

But that money is running out, and it won't be coming again. ...

But the way the budget is playing out, schools have nowhere to turn. In a sense, they're faring better than many health and welfare programs. Funding for these programs faces drastic cuts in the budget submitted by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, especially since the federal government is likely not going to bail out the state for the $7 billion the governor (seeks) ...

It's not a pretty picture ---- schools, and parents, are going to be angry over cutbacks. But programs for the poor and infirm face an even bleaker situation. ...
A state that can't, or won't, fully invest in the next generation is a state that has lost its way.
